The short answer: match the cover to the club before you match it to your taste. Driver covers are sized for standard 460cc drivers, hybrid covers for hybrids and rescues, and putter covers come in two shapes that are not interchangeable: blade and mallet. Get that right and the rest is personality.

Step 1: Know Which Cover Fits Which Club
| Cover type | Fits | Won’t fit |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | Standard drivers (460cc heads) | Hybrids and irons (too loose) |
| Hybrid | Hybrids / rescue clubs | Drivers (too small) |
| Blade putter | Blade-style putters (Anser, Newport-type heads) | Mallet putters |
| Mallet putter | Mallet-style putters (larger, rounded or winged heads) | Blade putters (too loose) |
The putter is where most gift mistakes happen. Look at the head from above: if it is a slim rectangle, it is a blade. If it is wide, rounded or has wings stretching back from the face, it is a mallet. When you are buying for someone else and are not sure, a driver or hybrid cover is the safe choice.
Step 2: Leather or Plush?
Headcovers come in two broad styles. Synthetic leather covers (like the USA Tribute 2.0, Army Man and Range Rat lines) are smooth, wipe clean and hold printed designs. Plush or faux-fur covers (like the Tiger and Highland Cow lines) are softer and look like the animal they are named after. Both protect the club; pick the look the golfer will actually enjoy pulling out of the bag.
On putter covers, check the closure. Most of the Pins & Aces putter covers we carry, including the Pirate mallet cover, list a magnetic closure, which is quicker on the green than a zipper or Velcro.
Matching Sets
A matching driver, hybrid and putter cover is one of the easiest ways to make a bag look finished, and it is an easy gift. We put together ready-made headcover gift packs that go to checkout in one click; the three headcover packs ship free with standard shipping.

Blade putters: Pins & Aces makes blade covers in Tiger, USA Tribute 2.0, Army Man, Highland Cow, Koi Flow and Western Aesthetic ($54.95), plus a Yellowstone collaboration and a Folds of Honor 2.0 cover ($59.95). Pins & Aces donates a portion of every Folds of Honor cover sold to Folds of Honor.
Pins & Aces Pirate Mallet Putter Cover
$54.95The one mallet cover in our store, with a custom pirate design and magnetic closure. It fits standard mallet-style putters, not blades.
Shop the Pirate mallet cover →Check the putter shape before you buy. A blade cover will not fit a mallet, and that is the most common headcover gift mistake.
Will a driver headcover fit my fairway wood?
Usually it will go on, but it will be loose. Driver covers are sized for 460cc heads; a fairway wood is noticeably smaller and can slip out.
How do I tell a blade putter from a mallet?
Look down at the head. A blade is a slim, narrow rectangle. A mallet is wider and deeper, often rounded or with wings extending back from the face.
Do headcovers actually protect clubs?
Yes. They stop club heads and shafts from knocking together in the bag, which causes dings, chips in the paint and scratches on putter faces.
What is the best headcover gift if I don’t know their clubs?
A driver cover. Almost every golfer carries a standard-size driver, so it is the safest fit.
