The short answer: Golf Pad TAGS are 15 small NFC tags that screw into the grip ends of your clubs. Before each shot you tap the club to your phone, and the free Golf Pad app records which club you used and where you hit it from. After a few rounds you have your real distance with every club. It is a low-cost way into shot tracking, and the trade-off is that you tap every shot yourself.

How Golf Pad TAGS Work
Each tag screws into the opening in the end of a grip. Then, on the course:
- Start a round in the Golf Pad app and keep your phone in your pocket or bag.
- Before each shot, tap the end of the club's grip to the back of your phone (near the top on an iPhone, where the NFC antenna sits).
- The app records the club and your GPS position and confirms with a vibration and a tone.
- Putts work the same way: tap the putter before each putt.
The tags have no batteries, so there is nothing to charge, and each one weighs 1.9 grams. After the round the app shows your shots on a map with the distance of each one, and it builds your club distances and stats over time.
What's in the Box
- 15 TAGS, enough for a full bag
- A code for 1 year of Golf Pad Premium, printed in the packaging (the refurbished sets don't list one)
You don't need Premium for the tags to work. They run on the free Golf Pad app; Premium adds deeper stats and club recommendations.
The Catches (Read These Before You Buy)
- It's one tap per shot, not hands-off. Golf Pad calls it automatic shot tracking, but you still tap the club to your phone before every shot and putt. If you forget, the shot isn't logged, though you can edit shots in the app afterwards.
- Your phone does the work. Smartwatches can't scan the tags, so the phone has to be on you or in the bag.
- iPhone battery. On iPhone, scanning runs in the app's SmartLock mode, which keeps the screen on at its lowest brightness for the round. Start with a full charge.
- Cases and magnets. Metal phone cases and magnets near the phone can block the NFC signal.
- Some grips won't take a tag. Grips without an opening in the end, including some SuperStroke counterweight putter grips, need the separate putter tag.
- Phone compatibility. iPhone 7 or newer (iOS 12+), or an Android phone with NFC (Android 4.0+).

No. The tags use NFC and have no batteries. Your phone needs charging, and on iPhone the screen stays on at low brightness while scanning.
Do Golf Pad TAGS track putts?

Can I use Golf Pad TAGS with my Apple Watch?
