TaylorMade P770 vs. Callaway Apex Pro — Which Players Iron Should You Buy?

The short answer: unlike the P790 matchup, this one is a fair fight. The TaylorMade P770 and the Callaway Apex Pro are both hollow-body players irons with a forged face, a 33° 7-iron and a 45° pitching wedge, and both cost about $200–$215 a club new. Buy the P770 if you want the more compact look and the newer design. Buy the Apex Pro if you want easier-launching long irons and a sole that glides through turf, or if you are buying used, where it is currently the cheaper of the two.

Why These Two Are the Real Matchup

A lot of golfers search for the P790 against the Apex Pro, but the P790 is a distance iron with a 30° 7-iron, so it flies farther simply because it has less loft. (We covered that in P790 vs. Apex Pro; Callaway’s real P790 rival is the Apex Ai200.) The P770 is the iron TaylorMade actually lines up against the Apex Pro. Same lofts, same hollow-body idea, same golfer: someone who wants a players-iron look but still wants help on mishits. Today’s Golfer’s P770 review said it is “every bit as good as the Callaway Apex 24 Pro” for golfers who like hollow-body irons.

TaylorMade P770 (2024)

The 2024 P770 went on sale September 6, 2024, at $1,399.99 for seven clubs. Per MyGolfSpy’s launch report, the update tightened the leading-edge radius for cleaner turf contact and thinned the topline to appeal to better players. Behind the face is SpeedFoam Air for feel, plus up to 41 grams of tungsten. TaylorMade’s FLTD CG sets the mass separately in each iron from the 4 to the 9, so the long irons launch higher and the scoring irons fly lower and more controlled. Golf Digest’s 2026 Hot List gave it a Gold medal. One panelist found it “about a half-a-club longer than average,” while another felt it suits scratch players a bit more because it is slightly less forgiving.

Callaway Apex Pro ’24

The Apex Pro ’24 was the first Apex Pro built as a hollow body. It pairs a forged face with a forged 1025 carbon steel body and fills the cavity with urethane microspheres to soften sound. The face changes through the set: a 455 face cup in the 3–5 irons for speed on long shots, and a 1025 carbon steel face in the short irons for control. Callaway’s Dynamic Sole adds a pre-worn leading edge and trailing-edge relief, and the lofts match the P770 exactly from 7-iron to pitching wedge. Callaway lists it at $215 a club and had sets on sale for $1,305 when we checked. On Golf Digest’s 2025 Hot List (Gold), panelists said it launches the ball very high, stays straight on mishits, and stands out for speed and turf interaction.

Buying Used? Here’s the Math

At 2nd Swing on September 29, used 2024 P770 sets started around $690, and used Apex Pro ’24 sets started around $552. That gap mostly comes from age, since the Apex Pro came out about a year earlier. If you want a P770 for less, older P770 sets were listed from about $495 at 2nd Swing, but check the model year before you buy. Whichever you pick, check the grooves and the face for wear, and have the lofts and lies checked if the set has been bent before.

Which One Should You Buy?

Buy the P770 if you want the cleaner, more compact look and a trajectory that goes from high long irons to lower, more controlled scoring irons. Buy the Apex Pro if your long irons are the problem clubs, if your strike is steep or heavy and you would welcome the forgiving sole, or if you are shopping used and want the lower price.
